The Liam Harvey Family Support Group was formed following the death of Liam Harvey on April 3, 2001 from cancer. The Group aims to provide a forum for people who have a child suffering from any form of cancer or leukaemia to discuss their problems and benefit from the experiences of others. The Group intends to publish a leaflet that will be available from Robin Ward that will give information on treatments as well as contacts, organizations and charities as well as contacts in the United Kingdom. The Group, while not politically motivated, will fight for the best of treatments to be made available locally where possible and hopefully make positive suggestions for improving services. The Liam Harvey Family Support Group is not a registered charity but is loosely affiliated to the local branch of C.L.I.C. (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood) with whom the Group has a close relationship. One of the founding principals is that the Group carries out no fund raising activities for itself. No one is expected to pay for any part of the group and there is no membership fee. Everyone who has a child with cancer or Leukaemia and lives in the Island of Jersey is welcome to attend the meetings, events, or simply make contact with the group for advice or support. Everyone within the group has first hand experience of childhood cancer and the problems and stress that this can cause. We therefore take pride in representing the whole family and not just the child with cancer. The Group intends to arrange events for children suffering from cancer and their immediate family. So far the support from local charities and businesses has been excellent. All information within the group is treated as confidential. This does also limit our potential for publicity however it is of overriding importance that members of the group can retain their anonymity. The Group continues to enjoy close links with Robin Ward at the General Hospital. |
